MindTrails Leads

Bethany Teachman, Ph.D., is the Director of MindTrails. Bethany is a licensed clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on biased thought patterns associated with anxiety and other forms of mental illness (see She also directs Project Implicit Health, a website where visitors can learn about their automatic associations toward different mental health topics.

Dan Funk is the lead software developer for MindTrails. Dan runs a software development company out of Staunton, Virginia called Sartography. Sartography's mission is to partner with scientists and innovators to create engaging software that improves the health and well being of our communities. Some of Dan's favorite projects are at the University of Virginia, working with leading experts to make the world a better place to live.

Laura Barnes, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Science Engineering, the Data Science Institute, and the Link Lab at the University of Virginia. She directs the Sensing Systems for Health Lab. Her research focuses on the design of intelligent systems for understanding the dynamics and personalization of health and well-being.

Mehdi Boukhechba, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Engineering Systems and Environment Department, the Link Lab, and the Center for Behavioral Health and Technology at the University of Virginia. His primary research interests are in ubiquitous computing, data science, behavioral modeling, and pervasive health technologies (see

MindTrails Coaches

Allie Silverman, M.A., is a doctoral student in clinical psychology in the department of Psychology at the University of Virginia. She leads the MindTrails coaching team, and trains and supervises all of the MindTrails coaches. Her research focuses on ways of increasing access to evidence-based mental health treatment, with particular focus on individuals who have limited resources.

Henry Behan, M.Sc., is the project coordinator on MindTrails team at the University of Virginia. He is involved in the day-to-day running of MindTrails, which includes managing data, programming the website, and participant recruitment/outreach. Broadly, his research interests include personality and psychopathology, life satisfaction, and digital interventions for mental health.

Suraj Patel is an undergraduate research assistant studying Psychology and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. He has been a long-term coach for MindTrails and his research interests include examining ways to effectively disseminate interventions to underrepresented populations as well as identify risk factors for suicidal and self-injurious behavior.

Sophie Ali is a third year undergraduate student studying Global Public Health and Psychology at the University of Virginia. She has been a research assistant in Professor Teachman's lab since last year and has had previous experience serving as a coach for MindTrails.
